"I'm Not an Artist"
Updated: May 31, 2022
“Im not an artist.” Have you ever found yourself saying this about yourself? I would like you to consider putting that thought aside for now and opening your heart to a new possibility. Take this in: You are a creative being. This is the truth about you! All human beings are born with the ability to create beauty in our world. I would like to tell you that you are no different. You are a beautiful, creative, interesting, and amazing soul. You may not know it yet. But I know it. I believe this in the deepest recesses of my being.
I would like you to try something new. Let's start very simply. Buy a simple inexpensive set of watercolor paints and brushes or borrow them from a friend or even from your kids! Buy or borrow some watercolor or other heavy paper. We will try this when there is a quiet moment in your life. Create the space. Even if it is after everyone else goes to bed or before they arise. This is your special moment...a gift of love to yourself. You may be feeling a little overwhelmed by this thought, or maybe panicked feeling like you dont know what to do. You can relax and rest easy. We are in this together.
In a quiet moment, get out your watercolor paint, a brush, paper and a jar or glass of water. Put some drops of water on each color of paint you wish to use and then take your brush and dip it into the wet paint take a deep breath and let your paint brush flow freely across the paper. Listen to the sound of the brush on the paper. Let your muscles relax and allow your breathing to slow. Let your brush move as you are inspired to move it. There is no judgement. No one even needs to see it if you so choose. Give yourself permission to create. Without plan, and without criticism. Just be free. How does this feel to you? My guess is that it feels amazing and freeing. I know because it wasn't so long ago that I picked up a brush and allowed myself to create. I had feelings of anxiety and stress about something so beautiful and so simple. But in those moments and eventually hours and days that followed, I got to know myself and began to allow the true and authentic soul who I am within, to emerge and to begin to at last take a more prominent place in my days. Don't go one more day before you allow yourself the gift of freedom to create and express the beauty of who you are.
